Our previous article on education was Best Polytechnics in Nigeria 2016 /2017 ranking and today we have a related topic to look into . Our review for today will focus on Top 10 Best Universities in Nigeria 2016/2017 ranking . This latest  ranking of the best Nigerian universities was released by the National Universities Commission (NUC) based on the general academic standards of this universities .

There are recorgnised body/organisations that is known for the yearly ranking of Nigerian university, the National Universities Commission (NUC) and webometric ranking but this ranking that we have here was compiled by National Universities Commission not webometric this should be noted .

I have come accross people arguing on which universities are the best in Nigeria ? the funny thing about it is that they are always sentimental as they prefer to place their own university ahead of others which is no ideal for university ranking. Top 10 List Of Best Universities in Nigeria 2016/2017

1. University of Ibadan, Ibadan
University of Ibadan is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the the urban setting of the large city of Ibadan . UI was founded in the year 1962 . The university started with just three faculties but now have about  thirteen faculties presently, that’s a rapid growth i must concur . But UI current have no  management courses but they are trying to make provision for such courses .

University of Ibadan (UI) offers courses and programs leading to officialy recognized higher education degrees such as undergraduate certificates/diplomas, bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. UI is not just the best University in Nigeria but also the oldest University in Nigeria . The present VC is Professor Isaac Folorunso Adewale .

2. University of Lagos, Lagos
Please be careful of many online ranking , there are several websites rankings that have University of Lagos as the best University in Nigeria which is not possible at this time but due to the fact that this ranking is subject to change this may come to pass in the nearest future but it hasn’t happen . University of Lagos is the second best university in Nigeria please readers should take note to avoid any misconception of any kind .

University of Lagos is abbrievated as Unilag, the higher educational institution was founded  in 1962 and the current Vice Chancellor is Professor Rahman A. Bello .

3. Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife
This higher educational institution is famously addressed as OAU and it is one of the best in Nigeria occupying the third spot on our list . Obafemi Awolowo University has been said to be the best when it comes to  Computer Science, coding and development. Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) was founded in the year 1962  in Ile Ife, Osun State, it was formally called  University of Ife . This versity is known for her excellent academic standards and high number of vibrant students . The school has a Nobel Laureate and four National Merit Award winners.

4. University of Ilorin
At the fourth spot is another prestigious university called University of Ilorin and this versity is comfortably sitting at the fourth position on our list . University of Ilorin was  brought to life in the year 1975 but was formally called University College of Ilorin and was operating as an affiliate of University of Ibadan . Fast forward to 1977 it gained full autonomy to operate on it’s own as a free university .

University of Ilorin currently has  fifteen faculties, although it also started with three during it inception.

5. Covenant University, Ota
If you have been so observant then you would understand that from the first spot to this fift spot there is no private university on any position but Covenant University is the only private university on the list of best 10 universities in Nigeria 2016/2017 . Covenant University private university owned and managed by Living Faith Church (winners chapel), and it was founded under the administration of Bishop David Oyedepo and it is located in Ota, Ogun State .

Covenant University was founded in the year 2002 and it current V.C. name is Prof. Charles Korede Ayo . The institution is known for strict rules and regulations. This institution is popularly called “no nonsense university” .

6. Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State
On the sixth spot is Federal University of Technology, Minna . This institution was intentionally established to focus on technical education in country and it was founded in the year 1983 . FUTMINNA is located along Minna >Kataeregi > Bida Road in Niger state, it has a capacity of 13,000 undergraduates, 2,000 post graduates and about 700 administrative staffs. The current Vice Chancellor name is Professor Musibau Adewumi Akanji .

7. University of Nigeria Nsukka, Enugu State
This institution is popularly known as UNN and it is one of the enviable tertiary institution in Nigeria with a special name that makes it standout among it contemporaries .University of Nigeria Nsukka is located in Enugu State and was founded in the year 1960 . Professor Benjamin C. Ozumba is the current Vice Chancellor .

8. University of Benin Ugbowo, Edo State
This University is located in Ugbowo Benin City, Edo State . It is popularly addressed as UNIBEN and it was founded in the year 1970 as an Institute of Technology . In 1971 that is the following year after it establishment , it was accredited as a full-fledged university by the NUC  and it name was changed from Institute of Technology to University of Benin in 1972. University of Benin as we all know is one of the best University in Nigeria due to it tremendous growth and increase in the number of faculties, departments, institutes and units . The current Vice Chancellor is Professor Faraday Orumwense .

9. University of Port Harcourt, Port Harcourt
Here is another prestigious Nigerian University that is the dream school for every Nigeria youth . The university was established as The University College, Port Harcourt in 1975. It was given a university status in 1977 following it rapid growth . The school has ten faculties and quite a number of professors . University of Port Harcourt has produced eminent personalities in the country . TAlking about the eminent personalities that has studied at University of Port Harcourt , we have the likes of former Nigeria president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Timipre Sylva (former Executive Governor of Bayelsa State),Muma Gee (singer and actress),  Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi (Governor of River state), Agbani Darego (former Miss World) and Rita Dominic (Nollywood actress).

10. Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria
This higher educational institution is popular called ABU , it is one of the oldest Nigerian University like University of Ibadan . Ahmadu Bello University was established in the year 1962 and it is located in Zaria, Kaduna State. It was initially called University of Northern Nigeria after which it was named after the Sardauna of Sokoto, Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello, the first premier of Northern Nigeria.

Needless to say, Ahmadu Bello University has also produced prominent people in Nigeria and most of them are leaders in their various communities/states . Some of these prominent people are Namadi Sambo,  Dahiru Mustafa,  Muhammad Bawa late Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’adua just to mention a few . These people are famous personalities in Nigeria that need no introduction . The current Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University is Professor Ibrahim Garba .
